Hi. Can you please tell me which brand of glass jars you use for freezing food and beverages? I was told only to use Ball brand and I got a bunch of them from Amazon. I tried to freeze milk and only filled the jar half way – to make plenty of room for expansion but it exploded and left a glassy dangerous mess all in my freezer. Is there anything else I can do to prevent glass breakage? I prefer glass to plastic containers but it seems I’m not doing something right. Thanks!

    Jennifer,

Hello. I’m a self sufficient father of three, husband of one. We quit the suburban rat race about five years ago to give this lifestyle a shot and it’s been an adventure. I’ve been writing about it without any real plans until someone suggested I do something with it.

I finally got around to putting it into a blog format that launched today and realized no one is ever going to see it if I don’t take the time to reach out to some of the places I have visited so here’s a link, let me know if you like it.

    Thanks again-

    Hi Jenn!
Really like your site! I would like to know how you have the visits at the top of each post? I would love to add that addition to my site if you wouldn’t mind sharing! Thanks!

Hi Lindsey – Thanks for connecting. I just looked at your site and its lovely. The of number of visits for each post is part of the WordPress theme I bought from Templatic – I used TechNews theme and customized the way it looks but the number of visits is part of the theme program.

    Hi Jennifer,

My name is Ariane and I am a researcher at a TV company based in Los Angles, called Twofour America.

I am in the process of casting for a new TV series set to film this summer, and I am writing to you to ask if we may enlist your help.

We are hoping to create a documentary series following families as they sell their homes and make the move to the country in order to live a self-sufficient, off-grid life. We are still on the hunt for 1 more family, who are in the first steps of making this move. In particular, we are looking for a Mom and a Dad with 2 or more children over the age of 10.

I would love to send you our casting notice via email, so that it may be passed on to the wonderful readers of your website.

Please let me know if this is something you would be happy to help us with.

    Thanks so much,
    Ariane

    Hi there Jennifer,

Hope you’re doing great. A friend of mine and reader of your blog forwarded your How to Start a Vegetable Garden post to me, which was great. Nice job on that and on the site in general. I’ve bookmarked it and will keep checking in.

I also read through your archives for a while and think some of what I am currently working on may be up your alley. I run a small business in Boulder, CO that organizes classes on Aquaponic gardening and sells kits and materials for the same.

If you are not familiar, Aquaponics is basically raising your own fish and food-bearing plants together, in a symbiotic system in which the plants filter the fish water and the wish waste give nutrients to the plants. The net result is a continuous supply of fresh veggies and fish for a family that requires little space can be created indoors or out.

Again, great post and good to meet you. Feel free to shoot me a note if you’d like to chat about aquaponics.

    Best,

    Sylvia

Hi Sylvia – thanks for visiting my blog. Aquaponics is very cool. I love systems that are symbiotic – too bad humans aren’t acting so symbiotic with our planet these days. Even though I won’t be raising any fish any day soon as I’ve so much other stuff on my plate right now, never say never! I’ll check out your site:)

Hi Jennifer. I would love to write something for your blog. My wife and I have been homesteading for the last 5 years or so. We built our own little home. We grow veggies, cut our own wood for heat, and are continually adding to the ‘stead. Last year we built an earth oven and this coming summer we are hoping to get a root cellar dug. I can also provide photos of our endeavours. Please feel free to contact me should you have a subject in mind.

    Thanks
    Taras
