I’m Jennifer Houghton. At the age of 46 I moved out of the suburbs onto an acre of land in the British Columbia mountains. This blog follows my adventures as I learn to be self-sufficient, grow my own food, and live amongst the pines.
Some might say I’m obsessed with frugality and living green. I would say I have a mania for it. Call me a Cheapskate Tree Hugger and I’ll thank yee for it.
I still have alot to learn about living off the land. Along the way I’ll hobnob with experienced homesteaders, farmers, carpenters, plumbers, lumberjacks, herbalists, crafters, old-timers, and cooks and share the learning with you.
My background includes professional Landscape Gardening, teaching yoga and fitness, working at a health food store, eating vegan, a lifetime of tinkering with tools, years of fiddling with Photoshop, a curiosity about alternative building methods, a love of furry creatures, and lots and lots of nature walks.
Let this be a gathering of kindred spirits seeking something more meaningful, a sweeter relationship with the earth, and perma-dirty fingernails.
Update May 2016: You may have noticed I haven’t posted here in a while. While I loved my piece of forest, I decided I want to go back to teaching yoga and fitness since I love it so much. So I’ve moved into a small town in BC – driving over 100km a day to teach just wasn’t doable anymore. Its always been my dream to live in a tiny house – I’m almost tiny at 520 square feet. Living in town has made it possible to do some things in a more eco-friendly way, e.g. I can ride my bike and walk instead of driving everywhere. I’m still growing veggies and living as frugally as possible. I love this homesteading-eco-loving community so I’ll keep this blog up and running. New posts will include eco-living and frugal living topics. There are lots of gorgeous trails around and I hike daily with my doggies, Grizz and Bella – so I’ll post videos and images of local flora, fauna, and mountains. Homesteadmania is still active as ever on Facebook so be sure to connect with me there. Meanwhile, if you want some gentle stretches to help with aches and pains, visit my yoga site at www.bountifulyogaandwellness.com. Pain relief for the over 50s is my specialty. Hope to see you there!
